My introduction to George Carlin was in Outrageous Fortune which was also my introduction and the beginning of my fondness for Bette Midler. It was also the first time I saw Shelley Long in and while I loved her in in it, can’t say so much for the rest of her stuff, it’s hit or miss for me.
But George stole the show…. as he always does any time I see him in something. I love Kevin Smith for casting him in Dogma and then again in his pet project, Jersey Girl. I actually love George best as the grandfather in JG than anything else that I’ve seen him in it. Unlike a lot of Kevin’s fans, I get what Jersey Girl was about and I think it’s wonderful. Will Smith did too which is why his cameo “as himself” is excellent as well.
Man… George…. so many times I wanted to go see him perform live. I lived in Vegas for two years and George played several times while I was there but curse my deafness, I opted out of paying the high ticket prices for a performance I wouldn’t understand without the captions.
But what I can do is get his performance dvds (that are captioned) and watch them instead. In honor of what I would have loved to see in person.
Oh George… it should have been the other one that is a failure at his job… not you. I hope your final weeks were happy ones.
Actor Daniel Radcliffe is determined to tone-up his body before appearing on Broadway’s Equus in the nude – and he’s not ashamed to admit it. The Harry Potter star, 18, will disrobe in the Broadway adaptation of the Peter Shafer play later this year – just as he did onstage in London when the play opened there in 2007. And Radcliffe made sure to stop by the gift lounge before Sunday’s 62nd Annual Tony Awards, where he shamelessly picked up a Scorcher Butt Machine – a piece of exercise equipment with “a special emphasis on butt shaping”. He says of his new work out regime, “They don’t have things like this in England. We never get gifts.”
If you liked Pan’s Labyrinth, you’ll like this one too. If Pan’s was a little too dark for you, this one is less dark.
They share similarities by being in a wartime, a kid whose home is invaded by barracked soldiers, but finds a little magic in their life.
The movie doesn’t reach the level of storytelling magic that 80s master trifecta (Labyrinth, Dark Crystal, Never Ending Story) did but it’s sweet and enjoyable. The 3d work on the water horse is pretty good, only a couple times does it look odd.
Definitely worth watching. Ben Chaplin turns in a nice performance as does the rest of the cast, even the little boy who is the lead character.
I’d been wondering why everyone was freaking out so much about the team splitting up on NCIS cause… when did that happen?
Turns out that right after the climatic death of a character, the credits rolled and I stopped the DVR. Usually when there’s a two hour finale, it goes from start to finish… not 1 hr episode and 1 hr episode.
Also I’d been in a distracted enough state that I didn’t pay attention to or notice that A) I’d only been watching for an hour and B) the progress bar was at the halfway point, not the end. The latter especially because I hit the stop button and not the pause.
So now I’m VERY thankful that I decided to keep the finale for a few days because I might want to rewatch it to be sure I didn’t miss anything.
Just WHAT is up with all the season finales these days? A major character (or two) has been shot (or blown up) in just about every show that I watch. Seems like there’s a mass exodus of regular characters as well.
Jesse L Martin left Law & Order (yes I was living under a rock and hadn’t heard of his departure beforehand)
*sigh* Damn you Anthony… you better not make L & O unwatchable for me.
Producers: You’ve kicked other people to the curb pretty quickly when they didn’t work out… fix your mistake and kick AA asap.
Too upset to go to sleep now. It’s just a TV show but then again, my first memory of Law & Order is being back in Pennsylvania with my Grandma and sitting down and watching it with her. Normally she let me pick what we watched. But I started wondering why she kept going upstairs to watch tv in my room. Went up after her and found her watching L & O. I sat down and watched it with her.
I didn’t get hooked on it then but everytime I ever saw mention of the show, I thought of her. Then at some point, I did start watching it and got hooked and have watched it ever since. I’ve been watching since it was Orbach & Noth.
So it’s upsetting to me to think of not being able to watch it anymore. But the memories of K-Ville… are just that bad.
Now to try and soothe the upset with this week’s NCIS.
I settled down tonight to watch an old favorite: Law & Order. When I clicked through the DVR screens to play it, I noticed "new series regular, Anthony Anderson".
NO! Especially not when it looks like it’s Jesse L Martin being replaced! He’s the last long term actor left on that show since Sam Watterson went to DA "cameo" status. I like Jeremy and he works well with Jesse.
But I hated KVille when I tried to watch it because while Cole Hauser was decent, Anthony just was BAD. I know there’s something that AA’s done that I did like him in but when it comes to drama especially cop ones, I just can’t stand the way he plays them. They come off uneducated and ignorant and just general all around trailer trash that it’s impossible to take them seriously.
There’s no room for AA who’s playing an IAB cop in this episode unless either Green or Lupo go. Formula calls for 6 players at all times, 3 in cop and 3 in court side. S. Epatha isn’t going anywhere… whoops I guess she would be the last long term actor since she did always have a definitive presence more so than the DA ever did.
I’m still watching the episode but my heart sank at the dialogue between S. Epatha and AA’s characters where AA tells her that he was "drafted" into IAB and indicated that he was hoping to go to Homicide. Could they make it any more obvious?
I usually hate it when people say that they don’t watch a show anymore because so and so left. I know plenty of people who’ve said that about ER which I still enjoy because even when the characters I love go away, others come along to keep it interesting for me. That’s just the nature of an ensemble show.
But… this is a little too much for me to have changed up the 4 main players within the past year. Besides, the only thing that made it bearable when Lenny Briscoe left (RIP Jerry Orbach) was A) Jerry clearly needed to retire for health reasons and B) we at least still had Detective Green who’d been around long enough to endear himself to us. So much better than Benjamin Bratt!
I guess I can understand that Jesse might be tired of Green and wanting to do other things. Heck I have to wonder if the reason the producers were ok with writing him out temporarily so he could go do Rent was because it was the only way to keep him. If that’s the reason, ok Jesse I’m with ya. But … if it’s the producers changing shit up? NO NO NO NO!!!
Besides, even if it’s Jesse’s plan to leave… I’m still pissed as hell at the producers for hiring AA. If you’re gonna hire anyone off the failed K-Ville show, how about hiring the guy that ISN’T responsible for making it unwatchable?
Going to finish watching the episode now. I pray that I’ve been making much ado about nothing.
Man I love this guy more every day. He really has his head on straight.
“I think there’s so many talented people on it — that’s what’s great,” said Guttenberg. “It’s a chance for everybody in America — we’re in a tough economic time, we’ve got a crazy presidential race going on — so I think that this show is so good for everybody and it makes the world a better place. I was glad to be on it.”
During the interview, Kimmel also asked Guttenberg what he thought about Penn Jillette’s recent comments that he felt it was unfair that Dancing with the Stars casts celebrity participants like Olympic gold medalist figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, who has been atop the judges’ leaderboard two weeks in a row. (Jillette and fellow competitor Monica Seles were eliminated in last week’s initial Dancing with the Stars sixth-season results show.)
“It’s not a real competition,” explained Guttenberg. “In a real ballroom competition, 10 couples dance together and the judges have a clipboard and they never talk. This is more of a television show — an entertainment show — so it’s not a real dance competition.“
If it was on Kimmel (I could have watched it! duh) then it should be on YouTube and sure enough it is:
Steve talks more about the “mango” part at about 2:15 into the clip.
My rough attempt to transcribe it:
“Truth is I knew it would be entertaining. And the funny thing is I just got a bunch of emails from these people… I went down to Katrina and I volunteered. And all these people that I helped when I was down there in Katrina, emailed me what a great [time and song?] when I was dancing with this guy and they just thought it was the [right?] time.”
He did a great job of straddling the fence there about his feelings about the man-man dance and that it’s another small landmark in gay acceptance in the media. Smart man.
The rest of the interview seems to focus on a blind date Steve had some time ago with a producer of the Kimmel show. That was bizarre.
Hope we’ll see more of Steve now… I need to look at what he’s been doing since the 80s. I did see that bad tv movie he did, “Tower of Terror” with Kirsten Dunst (who wasn’t even 16 then). But don’t recall anything else.
And for laughs: Steve in a Seagrams commercial (looks to be from the late 80s/early 90s judging by his hair)
I wonder what happened? Seems so weird especially given her son’s recent death. Her poor daughter. She’ll never know her mother and will grow up with only a tabloid joke for a memory.
Personally I was indifferent to her shenanigans. I didn’t care what her weight was. I didn’t care about whether or not she was a gold digger. As far as plastically enhanced tabloid fodder Playboy model blondes go, I’m more fond of Pamela Anderson & Jenny McCarthy. But I still think it’s sad that she’s dead because she wasn’t even 40.
I did find her massive weight gain and then loss and return back to her “normal look” inspirational.
I am amused that it was considered worthy of a big fat “Breaking News” header on CNN’s page.
I’m also amused that it’s the topic of conversation in workplaces across the nation!
But perhaps the best amusement of all…. Anna’s death has killed a very popular LiveJournal community, ohnotheydidnt, a user driven place that covers crazy celebrity doings.
For the record, my theory is a combination of alcohol, antidepressants, and those diet pills that she’s the spokeswoman for, TrimSpa X32. Their makers must be shitting themselves right now. If they’re innocent as the chemical catalyst causing her death, it’ll take a LOT of money and spin control to convince the public of that.
